Looking closely at Dave and Buck.....

Why does Dave beg to remain at the traces, even though it will kill him? Would Buck have made the same decision?

  2. Even though this decision will kill Dave, he chose to stay in the traces. He was probably used to pulling a sled since he was a little puppy, and it was a nice challenge for him. In the book it says that the dogs always give their best in pulling sleds, until they die. Dave also wanted to keep pulling the sled because he was proud of his place in the harness, where he was over all the time, and didn´t want Sol-leks to take his place.
Buck would probably have made the same decision as Dave. I think so because during the time Buck was this icy place he found his passion of pulling the sled and always aiming to be the best. While he is pulling the sled he is close to the wild/nature, which makes him feel like he is at home.

  3. I think Dave continued pulling the sled because he had being doing that almost all his life and if he was going to die ( he would die either way: if he stayed in the sled, of tiredness and if he stopped, starving) he would like to die pulling the sled, with his family, in the wild that is where he comes from and doing he's job.
I'm not really sure about what would Buck do but I think he would continue, because that's what he's there for, and because he wants to do as good as his ancestors, who were also sled dogs.

  4. The reason why I think Dave stayed in the trail, is because he wanted the accomplish the task. I think that his life pulling the sled, from his younger year, was like a task for him. He guess that he wanted to exert his all his effort. Even if he will die, he wanted to die doing the thing he liked(maybe) and that had a memory to his life. He also may thought that pulling sled was fitting him, and comfortable (even if its comfortable, he is having a hard time in the harness) doing it.
Buck would also make a decision of staying, because I think that he also wanted to complete his task as a sled dog. I think that Buck is not kind of a dog who drop by the way side.

  5. Dave was determined to finish his part for the job. HE probably spent his life on the sled and didn't know about a life without pulling sleds. Dave didn't want any other dog taking his place while he was alive so he never gave up. Buck probably would have done the same decision as in chapter three, he wanted to be leader of the team. He wouldn't have any other dog take his place as leader as long as he was alive!

  6. I'm pretty sure all the dogs have their goals. Just like humans. And so as Dave. Dave is a "sled dog". He had spent his life with a sled from when he was little till now. He was very determined about his work/job so he couldn't give up. He believed himself because he knew he could do it since he had done it for so many years. For this reason, I think Dave stayed at the traces to show his best until he died for good.

In my opinion, I think Buck would also make a same decision as Dave because Buck is a very strong hearted dog, who would never give up and complete the goal. Like when he badly wanted to be a leader of the pack and finally he did! It was his goal. So I think like Dave, when Buck sets his own goal he will complete it till he dies for good.

  7. As you can see Dave is is very determined to finish what he started. He probably was on the sled team for a very long time. He is one of those dogs who would never give up, he probably wanted to die doing something that he loved which is (riding in the sled team). He is also a very loyal dog to the sled team, he wouldn't want anyone else to come and just take his position. So i think dave stayed at the traces to show how loyal and determined he was.

First of all Buck is the leader of the the team. As far as i know the leader/ captain or the head never betrays or quits on their team. Buck is also a very determined dog, so i think he would stay on this team no matter what happens.

  8. Dave did his best to complete the journey, even until his death, because he probably was a sled dog for quite some time and he knew that he needed to do his part for the team. So, in my opinion, I think Dave stayed at the traces to portray his loyalty, determination and effort.

Buck definitely would have done the same as he has always been a loyal dog and never let his team down throughout the book, until his near-death experience.

  9. The reason I think Dave stayed in the sled is because he was very determined to finish what he had started. He wanted to finish the task and feel accomplished.
On the other hand, Buck was the lead dog and he would stay on the team not letting them down as he too was very determined.

  10. These dogs are strong, determined and hardworking. They have this unbreakable spirt that they will go down fighting. Dave unfortunately fell ill but he didn't give up he kept going and pulling the sled. Even Buck or any other dog wouldn't give up its in there blood not to. If they make it through one day, great! But tomorrow's a new day with new challenges.

  11. Why would Dave go until he killed himself? Dave didn’t want to give up his position he has in the sled because he would get beaten. It was also his purpose in life. He was too proud to give it up. Dave has been doing this his whole life. He doesn't want to give up now.
When Dave was a puppy, he was already beginning to be trained as a sled dog. He is now being brutally treated, but he is so proud that he would die for what he has accomplished. In the book it says, “The half-breed tried to drive him away with the whip; but he paid no heed to the stinging lash, and the man had not the heart to strike longer. Dave refused to run quietly on the trail behind the sled, where the going was easy, but continued to flounder alongside in the soft snow, where the going was most difficult, till exhausted.” That quote is saying that Dave was so determined to keep his spot in the pack that he got beaten so bad he was throbbing.
Would Buck have done the same thing as Dave? I think that Buck would have done the same thing as Dave. Buck was in there trying to earn his role in the sled. Buck would have had a harder time making the decision because he wasn’t just a sled dog. He used to be a pet. Buck would most likely think that there is a chance at being a house dog again, but in the end I think he would have stayed there until he died. Buck wanted to complete the task of being a sled dog. Buck also wouldn’t have given up in his life, so he would fight for his life until he couldn’t physically do it anymore.
